Challenges of Entrepreneurs in the EU: Theory and Field Insights from Croatia

On June 13, 2025, at the Faculty of Economics in Skopje, Professor Vesna Bucevska delivered a presentation titled Challenges of Entrepreneurs in the EU: Theory and Field Insights from Croatia, sharing the knowledge and experiences she gained during her stay in Croatia. Prof. Vesna Bucevska examined the theoretical underpinnings and practical realities facing EU entrepreneurs. Based on fieldwork in Samobor, Zagreb, and Dubrovnik, she discussed challenges such as bureaucratic barriers, limited access to finance, skills mismatch, and demographic shifts. Real-life examples from Croatian SMEs like Filipec Cellar and Mirnovec Technology were used to highlight gaps between institutional theory and practice. Her analysis revealed a need for more effective use of EU funds, better regulatory environments, and enhanced innovation infrastructure, especially to counter rural brain drain and support business succession.
